Here’s are some links about Internet Safety, Digital Parenting, and Cyber Crimes involving kids that we think are noteworthy and deserve your attention.

A 12 year old with a three year addiction to hard core pornography! The National Center on Sexual Exploitation talks about him in this article.

Love146 has a great article about using the Internet. We think it’s a must read for every parent and tween/teen!

CNN released it’s study “Being Thirteen: Inside the Secret World of Teens”

It’s a must read/watch for any parent of a pre-teen.

Personally, I have two takeaways.

  1. Teens use of social media is a popularity barometer that often makes those who are unpopular feel left out. “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer” so to speak.
  2. This project also really underscored the need for parents to be aware of what is happening online and how it is affecting their kids.

Here’s a couple crime cases from earlier this week:

Brooklyn Man Sentenced to More Than 15 Years in Prison for Enticing a Minor to Engage in Criminal Sexual Conduct

  • His youngest victim was eleven years old.

El Paso-Area Man Sentenced to 18 Years’ Imprisonment for Sex Trafficking of Minors (more detail here)

Parents, be on the know regarding the app “popjam” designed for kids 7-12. It’s like Instagram for kids. (More info here from the Guardian.)

The Tyler Clementi Internet Safety Conference was held at the New York Law School. Frederick Lane offers a  good write up about it here.

The International Bullying Prevention Association’s 2015 Conference will be held November 8-10, Denver, Colorado. (More info here.)
